Domain 4 in the Danielson Group’s 2013 Framework for Teaching Evaluation Instrument is listed as Professional Responsibilities with 6 subcategories: Reflecting on Teaching, Maintaining Accurate Records, Communicating with Families, Participating in the Professional Community, Growing and Developing Professionally, and Showing Professionalism. There are many layers to what some may consider the most important domain for a teacher; the one that reflects growth. Domain 1is Planning and Preparation, Domain 2 is Classroom Environment, and Domain 3 is Instruction; all of these reflect the teachers skills in particular areas specific to teaching. Domain 4 is specific to the teacher, while this is subtle it is very important to the success of the teacher. Problems in Domains 1 through 3 can be fixed through Domain 4 while Domain 4 is harder to fix because it comes from within, the development of these components is personally motivated. I think in the same way we frame student objectives with Students Will Be Able To (SWBAT), we should frame the components of Domain 4 with Successful Teachers (ST). For example Component 4a would read “Successful Teachers Reflect on Teaching”, and so on through the list of components or subcategories as I referred to them previously.
Reflecting on teaching is very important for successful teaching, teachers need to reflect personally on what worked and what didn’t based on their point of view as well as the point of view of the students measurable through their assessment/activity. Teachers can also reflect through constructive criticism and suggestions offered by administration through formal and informal observations. Successful teachers maintain accurate records; be that attendance, assessment or parent/teacher interaction it is very important for teachers to keep organized and accurate records. Successful teachers communicate with families. The communication is as important of the content. It is important to maintain professional relationships with parents, not disclosing personal information or opinions. It is important to deliver accurate and objective information to parents regarding with children both good and bad, and it is also important to maintain each child’s right to privacy. This means not discussing anything about a child with a non-parental pick up person as well as any other parents of classmates, etc. It also means to take care for privacy when talking to parents around other adults or children and using digression when discussion students with fellow educators as well. Successful teachers participate in the professional community. This can be done by forming healthy relationships with fellow educators; this can be done through a Professional Learning Network (digital network of social media components) and this can be done through professional face-to-face networking. Successful teachers grow and develop professionally. This can be done through school scheduled professional development as well as personally chosen professional development programs. Finally successful teachers show professionalism. This is done through the way they conduct themselves both in and out of the classroom in action and attire.
I hope to become a successful teacher at the soon approaching end of this program. Through my experiences in student teaching I have gain so much professionally. I listen intently to the conversations between teachers and administrators during meetings and down time. I accept suggestions from my cooperating teacher and bounce ideas off of her for my teaching. I have also had the opportunity to sit in on meetings and lessons conducted under the Children’s Literacy Initiative and it has been a great experience; this has been a professional development portion for me. I am very careful how I present myself to the students, the parents, the other teachers and the administration. I take time to reflect on my lessons immediately after I am done teaching as well as in the future, especially when I can see/hear what they learned being applied to a new lesson. I have learned a lot about myself as a teacher; I like to take calculated risks that will give the students a new way to look at old information or a new way to receive new information. I am working on my organization and the accuracy of my records. I am taking mental notes, if you will, in all the classrooms I visit as well as from my PLN (Personal Leaning Network) involvement on social media. I am excited to step out of the world of pre-service teacher and into the world of traditional classroom teacher. I am thankful for my experience in Early Childhood Education for preparing me professionally as well as personally. I think the Danielson framework is a great tool to measure teachers because of the interconnectedness of all of the components or subcategories and its focus on teacher responsibility and accountability.
