All this week I have been working on the same standard,
Standard - CC.1.2.K.G - Answers questions to describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.
I have taught to this standard in three different ways, on the first day we rewrote the text to a big book based off the illustrations where I had the text covered, on the second lesson we re-illustrated a big book where I had the illustrations covered. During this lesson I have them individual books and they loved it J During my third lesson I re-wrote a text not related to the illustrations under a big book and we talked about the way illustrations and text work together. Since I came to the site the students have been working on the 3 ways to read; read the words, read the pictures and retell the story. They completed three assessment activities aligned with the three lessons. They had to dictate/write text for a pre-illustrated, they had to illustrate a pre-written text and they had to match appropriate illustrations to a pre-written text. They completed the activities in a way that demonstrated their understanding of the standard/objectives/lesson content. I tapped or have my advisor observe all three lessons. The biggest thing I learned is that I struggle with time management. I knew I did in my regular life; I’m usually late places, I don’t estimate travel time well, I have no reference for time passed, etc. I learned that my lessons are too long, I start to lose them as the lesson moves along. What I complete in a single rug session should probably be at least two. They enjoy when I teach and try to hang in there with me but in order for me to be more effective and for them to remain engaged I need to reduce the times for each activity. Otherwise I think I am growing on previous experience daily. I have been in the field for a long time and prior to this semester I was nervous about transitioning to a more traditional role in a traditional classroom but things are going well and I am learning a lot every day.
My short term goal is more dynamic teaching strategies, I am really learning a lot from the other teachers in the building, my cooperating teacher included. I am a tactile learner; I learn better by seeing and experiencing so actually being in the classroom and watching experienced teachers has been a great value to my experience as a pre-service teacher.
