This course has opened up my eyes to the possibilities of using technology in the classroom outside of the traditional. The NETS standards for teachers and students are a helpful guideline for using technology in the classroom. They give an outline to proper use and well as classroom integrity of use. I think the software I have used the most, that I discovered because of this course, is Jing. I have used it most recently as a reference tool when experiencing technological difficulties with both Drexel and Community College of Philadelphia. It is great for me because I am very visual but sometimes struggle to explain what I am seeing to others; this allows me to show them and narrate at the same time. I am currently a School Age After School Supervisor, in my classroom we have computers but they are currently in need of a major overhaul. My goal is to have them up and running by the summer. I would like to use Jing to demonstrate how the children can open and use the age appropriate software available to them.
The NETS Standards for Teacher are particularly important; I think the fourth is the most relevant due to the rampant use of social media but both teachers and students. The 4th standard states that teachers are to, “Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility.” “Teachers [must] understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.” I believe the biggest showing of digital citizenship involves respecting someone’s privacy. Not everyone uses their social media for the same purpose; some use it strictly for business, some to maintain and form new relationships and other for amusement. I believe that it is important to teach children to respect their peers’ feelings towards social media. As a teacher I must respect my students, colleagues and employers stance towards the use of social media. Generally I make it a rule not to interact with my students, their parents or my colleagues or employers on social media. I believe this is the best way to avoid drama or any problems.
The thing I will remember most with this course is that the use of technology in the classroom should make sense; it needs to be justifiable through standards. If you (the teacher) can’t prove or articulate why you are using the technology that it is of no help to the students.
